What does a Doula do?

"She handled details during my delivery that made it much easier for my partner to focus on being there for me"

"...all that I could remember and focus on was her soothing voice telling me I was doing great and to keep going. She was literally like an angel."

What is a Birth Doula?

A birth doula is a non-clinical emotional and physical comfort support person, trained in birth. As a birth doula, my job is to empower you with the information you need to make your own decisions about your birth plan, remain with you throughout labour to provide emotional and physical comfort, demonstrate and assist with breastfeeding, and focus on your unique needs and desires. My goal is to ensure you feel supported for the type of birth you want.

Birth doulas attend all types of birth- hospital, home, vaginal, cesarean, VBAC, you name it. It isn't about us, it's about you, and your needs. After baby has arrived, they provide some postpartum support to help you bond immediately, and get confidently settled.

What I don't do

I don't perform clinical tasks like check your cervix or prescribe medication. I don't replace your partner, I don't speak for you, and I don't make decisions for you. I don't contact anyone on your behalf. I don't share your personal information or birth experience with anyone.

What I do

Instead, I help you find the resources you need, and uncover options you may not know existed. I support and work with your partner to help them support you. I help you find your voice, and I make sure you have the info you need to make your own decisions as you feel comfortable. I explain information that is new or seems confusing, to make sure you feel empowered to make the decisions that are best for you

During labour, I am there to coach you and your partner with emotional support, breathing techniques, relaxation, massage, movement and position options, and almost any way needed to get you as comfortable as possible and help your baby down smoothly. I am there to assist, mediate, support, and CELEBRATE you and your family!

As someone who's pregnant, or their partner, you’re probably excited and want to make the most of this birth experience. You’ll likely find yourself wondering things like “what’s normal? What are my options? What can I do?” For some, the idea of planning for a birth and managing the event can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. A knowledgable and experienced doula can be there throughout your pregnancy and entire labour, to help you navigate your birth experience with a calm confidence

You have more power than you may realise, and my job is to help you harness that!

What happens in a prenatal visit?

I tailor my prenatal visits to your unique needs and requests. During our prenatal visits, we can discuss your background, birth preferences, practice labour positions and breathing, and discuss and demonstrate breastfeeding. We can practice comfort movements, and relaxation techniques. I provide you with options and resources. I listen to you and support you emotionally, and help you feel comfortable in your prenatal mindset.

What happens in a postpartum visit?

Postpartum visits are to help you in ways that allow you to bond with your baby. That could be continued breastfeeding support, grocery pickup, meal preparation, or light housework and laundry. We also discuss what is "normal" postpartum, in terms of body sensations, baby care, and emotions. I provide you with postpartum care options and resources. I listen to you and support you emotionally, and recount and celebrate your birth experience, answering any questions you may have afterward.
